HOCRN: help, scholarships and community programs

Need help?

Not sure where to start? HOCRN’s 24-hour help line connects residents and visitors with information and appropriate local resources. Ask about assistance, transportation, volunteering or ways to support the community.

HOCRN handles assistance requests directly. Availability and eligibility depend on the program; contacting the help line does not guarantee assistance. Please do not send personal case details through the Guide.

Scholarships for local students

Students: review HOCRN’s scholarship information and ask about the next application cycle. Its published awards include HOCRN scholarships, the James “Jim” Cherry Memorial Scholarship, the June “Sassy” Call Scholarship, and the Fire Chief William D. McCluskey Memorial Scholarship.

The general scholarship description focuses on graduating Mogollon High School seniors. The McCluskey scholarship also considers past MHS graduates pursuing fire science, emergency medical training, forestry or related studies. HOCRN emphasizes volunteering and service to the community broadly; its published description does not limit service to church activities.

The official page includes past recipients, not a complete current application package. Confirm this cycle’s eligibility, award amounts, required materials, deadline, where to obtain forms and how to submit them directly with HOCRN before applying.

Free shuttle service

HOCRN offers free rides for people who have no other means of transportation. Call 928-243-8251 to request a ride and confirm availability. This is the same number published for its help line.

  • Local Heber–Overgaard rides: Tuesdays and Thursdays, with at least 24 hours’ notice. The shuttle page lists 9 a.m.–4 p.m.; the homepage lists a noon–1 p.m. break. Confirm your pickup time when calling.
  • Regional rides to Show Low, Pinetop, Lakeside or Snowflake: Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 9 a.m.–4 p.m., with at least 72 hours’ notice.
  • Riders must be ambulatory. The vans are not wheelchair accessible.
  • Passengers under 18 must be accompanied by a parent, legal guardian or authorized adult.

Volunteer with HOCRN

HOCRN is volunteer-powered. Its published needs include thrift-store help, van drivers, furniture pickup, phone support, fundraising, grant writing and Resource Network Day. The official volunteer page provides application and resource forms. Driver applicants are also asked for a three-year Arizona driving record and a copy of their driver’s license; submit these directly to HOCRN.

Students, families and community service

Looking for a useful way to contribute? Ask HOCRN about suitable garden work or other community-service opportunities. Before a minor participates, confirm the role’s minimum age, adult supervision, parental consent and any required forms. The published information does not establish one set of youth rules for every role.

GROWTogether community garden

At 2181 W. Country Club Drive in Overgaard, behind Mountain Meadows Primary School, GROWTogether brings neighbors together to learn organic gardening, soil care and water conservation. HOCRN’s August 2026 update describes student garden beds, a summer youth gardening program and an orchard at the newer site.

Garden volunteers help with growing, workdays, classes and community activities. The garden’s support page describes produce and assistance for the food bank and Senior Center. Ask the garden team about current opportunities, participation options and youth requirements.
